[Verse 1] [D]It was early springtime when the strike was on, They [G]drove us miners out of door[D]s, Out from the houses that the Company owned, We moved into [A]tents up [D]at old Ludlow. [Verse 2] I was worried [D]bad about my children, Soldier[G]s guarding the railroad bridge, [D]Every once in a while a bullet would fly, Kick up [A]gravel under my [D]feet. [Verse 3] We were so [D]afraid you would kill our children, We dug us a [G]cave that was seven foot deep[D], Carried [G]our young ones and pregnant [D]women Down [A]inside the cave to sleep. [D] [Verse 4] That very night your soldiers waited, Until all [G]us miners were asleep[D], You snuck [G]around our little [D]tent town, Soaked [A]our tents with your kerosene. [D] [Verse 5] You struck a match and in the blaze that started, You [G]pulled the triggers of your gatling gun[D]s, I made a run for the children but the fire wall stopped me. Thirteen [A]children died from your [D]guns. [Verse 6] I carried [D]my blanket to a wire fence corner, Watched the [G]fire till the blaze [D]died down, I helped some people drag their belongings, While your bullet[A]s killed us all [D]around. [Verse 7] [D]I never will forget the look on the faces Of the men and [G]women that awful [D]day, When we stood around to preach their funerals, And lay the [A]corpses of the dead [D]away. We told the [G]Colorado Governor [Verse 8] [D]to call the President, Tell him to call [G]off his National [D]Guard, But the National Guard belonged to the Governor, So [A]he didn't try so very [D]hard. [Verse 9] Our women [D]from Trinidad they hauled some potatoes, Up [G]to Walsenburg in a little [D]cart, They sold their potatoes and brought some guns back, And they put a [A]gun in every [D]hand. [Verse 10] The state soldiers [D]jumped us in a wire fence corners, They did not [G]know we had these gun[D]s, And the Red- neck Miners mowed down these troopers, You should have seen those [A]poor boys [D]run. [Verse 11] We took some [D]cement and walled that cave up, Where you killed [G]these thirteen children in[D]side, I said, "God bless the Mine Workers' Union," And then I [A]hung my head and [D]cried.
