a gentleman farmer

was appointed by the Continental Congress
to be the Commander in Chief of the
Colonial Army.
George Washington was to lead

[G]ill -equipped citizen soldiers

The Revolutionary War
had been fought.
[G]The victory [D]won
and General Washington returned to his wife, Martha,
[G]at Mount Vernon to resume farming.
[Cb]But [G]the new na[C]tion he had
helped [G]to create
[D]couldn't spare [Am]him.
The [C]country seethed [Db]with un
[C]rest.
Congress was without
lead[Db]ership or [C]power.
[D]Its pa [Eb]per money worth next to nothing,
while [F]tariffs brought [D]trade between the
[G]states to a stand[Eb]still.
[D]As Washington [Eb]sadly wrote to a friend,
there are [D]combustibles in every state
which a spark might set fire to.
He attended the Constitutional Convention
as [G]a delegate from Virginia,
[D]but his reputation and prestige
made him its natural presiding [G]officer.
[Gb]After months of heated debate
and prolonged argument,
a [G]new form of government
[Cb]began to [Gb]emerge,
and men of conflicting opin[G]ions
looked to George Washington for
leadership.
[Gb]Firs[G]t in war, first in peace,

First in the hearts of [G]his countrymen.
Washington,
who favored a strong central government
controlled by wealthy,
educated men,
[C]nevertheless scorned
Alexander Hamilton's [G]proposal
that a monarchy be established
with a title nobil[Eb]ity.
He stood [G]staunchly behind the new Constitution,
and the states, which feared
the strong central power embodied
in the Constitution,
[Eb]placed their faith in th[G]e integrity of a man.
In 1789, George Washington,
by unanimous vote of the electors,
was chosen to be the first president
of the United [D]States.[G]
[D]
[G]Everything [D]in [G]his administration
was a first in American history.
He appointed the first cabin[Am]et,
Thomas Jef[G]ferson,
Alexan[D]der Hamilton,
Henry Knox,
and Edmund Randolph.
[G]The first new states,
Vermont, Kentucky,
and Tennessee,
were admitted [Gb]to the union.
The Su[G]preme Court met for the
[E]first time.
The National Mint was established.
[A]The[D] first census tak[A]en
and the first 10 amendments to
the Con[D]stitution,
[A]the Bill of Rights,
were adopted.
Washington served for
[D]two consecutive term[G]s.
An infam[C]ation groped for iden[Bb]tity,
and as a [Eb]par ent,
[C]Washington faced all the hardships
[G]and outrages of politica[C]l fortune.
He was [G]called tyrant
and accused of injustices and [C]imprudence.
The beginning of [E]a two -party
political system
made him [C]the target of
every ambitious politician.
It was with a sense of relief
that George Washington
saw his eight years in the presidency
come to an end.
Now, [G]at last,
he could re[F]tire to Mount Vernon.
He had [D]given his life to
[C]his country
and guided her first faltering footsteps
to the path of greatness.
In December of 1799,
[Db]he caught a cold
that developed into a high fever.
[C]As was the custom of the day,
the doctors bled him.
And knowing the end was near,
Washington spoke his last words.
I thank you for your attention.
You had better not take any more
trouble about me,
but let me go quietly.
The news went out,
and everywhere people wept.
Throughout the young country,
the nation mourned the
