[Verse 1]
[G]Always one of [D]our more popular songs. I suppose that is because it [A]features our long-time friend, friend, Jeremy Enigk, who also sings with Sunny Day Real Estate. Aaron, Nick,
[G]Jeremy and I played together early on, if you can call it playing! We had fun. Since this song was written to be a duet, we thought it would [A]be great to sing [D]with Jeremy again. And so we did. [A]Jeremy changed the lyrics slightly on the bridge (artistic license, I suppose), but it came out rather [G]well. He also dreamt up the great background vocals!

[Verse 2]
'Digging Deep' is a [G]song focused on reaching out to others, that is, with the Gospel. [D]It [A]is frightening. It is difficult. It is unnerving to put yourself 'out-on-a-limb' so so [G]so much, but it is absolutely the calling of our Lord! There are times, however,
when we don't heed the Word of God [A]and [D]we 'won't' share with someone... it could be that a see[A]d will never be planted in them. This song ends with the first verse (again), but the[G] idea is that this time we are going to follow through... though we [D]are scared.
So [A]now

[Verse 3]
hold your breath
[G]And set the [A]stage[D]
Prepare [A]yourself for the cyn[G]ic's [D]rage
Is it a [A]question still of [G]who is [D]man?
Or how [A]they feel and [G]what I am

[Verse 4]
[A]
but digging deep I found [G]a way[D][A]
What more do I [G]need to say

[Interlude 1]
[G][D]
[A][G][A][D][A][G]
[D]
gone [A]through life

[Verse 5]
and death
And [G]what [D]remains
If any [A]blemish hang your
[G]head in [D]shame
Like a [A]fever that just [G]keeps
you [D]down
Would you [A]simply let it stay
[G]around?

[Verse 6]
[A]
'digging deep' I guess I
[G]say[Bm][G][D][A]
Is more pridefulness of
[G]that day[D][G][D][A]
In truth I know that [G]it is [D]clear[A]
I was distant, [G]God is near

[Interlude 2]
[G][D][A][G][A]
[D][A][G][D][A][G]
[D][A][G][Bm]

[Verse 7]
in the [Bm]goodness and [G]strife
Found and empty want[D]ing [Bm]life
Though so long made no [G]sound
With tears I bowed myself
[D]down
[A]

[Verse 8]
won't you greet this man
And [G]hear his [A]words[D]
Maybe [A]an open ear would
[G]make him [D]stir
Could [A]a closed heart have saved
[G]all man?

[Verse 9]
[A]
digging deep I guess I [G]say[D][A]
Is more prideful[G]ness of
[D]that [A]day
In truth I know that [G]it is [D]clear[A]
I was distant, [G]God is near

[Verse 10]
[D]
so [A]now hold your breath and
set [G]the [D]stage
Prepare [A]yourself for
[G]the cynics [A]rage[D]
Is it a [A]question still of [G]who is [D]man?
Or how [A]they feel [D]and what I am

[Outro 1]
