didn't understand.
He had trapped us without our knowing it,

the land of hush into insistent, savage,
throbbing crescendos of ecstasy,
as if it were the only thing we could do.
We started to chant with him.

laughing with all his might,

But there were those among us [D]who were jealous of [F]his powers,
[G]who felt they should be in the centre of the stage,

are going to be with him [G]every free mo[D]ment.

these [G]critics set [D]to work to make nonsense out of the
sense of what we were doing.
And they succeeded.
They destroyed our hero's faith [G]in himself.

After a [F]few disappoint[E]ing times [D]in the big aud[F]itorium,
the light gone [G]out of him, [D]we
all stopped [Am]going, and the [F]man who had once
seemed so tall [D]and who now seems so much smaller

We lived through the [G]boredom of the time [D]that followed,
[G]telling each other [F]pale stories
[E]of what once was
and what [D]might have been if.
We lived on histories and hopes.
We did this until the miracle
we never thought would happen
again happened,
Another stranger came into our [Am]town,
and he [D]too was [G]tall and [D]dark and had [Am]eyes that could look right down into the bottom of you.
[E]And he got us all together in the big[D] auditorium,[Am]
and with the light on him, we were in the [D]dark.
