[Verse 1]
[Bb]A -ah [Am]-ah -ah -ah,
[D]A -ah -[G]ah -ah -ah -[Am]ah.[E][D]
[A]A -ah [Am]-ah -ah,
[D]A -[Am]ah -ah -ah -[G]ah,
A -ah -ah -ah.
There was this stranger
who [D]came into our town.
[A]He was [G]tall and [D]had a dark look
about [Am]him.
And a special brilliance was in [E]his eyes.
When he looked at [G]us,
[D]there was the feeling
Something [Am]that he could see right
[D]down to the [A]bottom.[E]
[G]We may have been mistaken in [E]this, but at the [G]time,
no [D]questions were asked.
The questions always come
later[Am].
[D]All we cared about was the [E]mystery we [Am]sensed in this stranger,
an[G]d we waited to [D]see what
would [G]happen.
One evening that was different from any other,
he got us [E]all together in the [G]big auditorium.
He stood there on the huge [C]stage.
[G]The onl[D]y light was on him,
[G]and [D]we waited [G]in the dark.
Then out of his tallness came the [Gm]chanting,
[G]fir[D]st as a whisper we [G]could hardly hea[D]r.
The [Am]flippity chip [D]on the bippity [G]pop,
the flippity chip on the bippity [C]pop.
[G]It [D]didn't make any sense.
[G]We were caught up in something we
didn't understand.
He had trapped us without our knowing it,
pos[D]sibly it [G]was his manner, [D]an d we came alive
to [Cm]him as he [G]slowly moved [D]us with his [G]chant through
the land of hush into insistent, savage,
throbbing crescendos of ecstasy,
as if it were the only thing we could do.
We started to chant with him.
The flippity -jib -bum,
the bippity -bop.
[Gm]The flippity [G]-jib -bum, the bippity -bop.
[Gm]And he was up on the high [G]stage
laughing with all his might,
yes, yes, yes.
But there were those among us [D]who were jealous of [F]his powers,
[G]who felt they should be in the centre of the stage,
with the [D]light shining on them.
[G]They were against [D]our hero and the chanting and
are going to be with him [G]every free mo[D]ment.
[E]And so little by [D]little, a little later,
these [G]critics set [D]to work to make nonsense out of the
sense of what we were doing.
And they succeeded.
They destroyed our hero's faith [G]in himself.
[F]He didn't have it [D]anymore.
After a [F]few disappoint[E]ing times [D]in the big aud[F]itorium,
the light gone [G]out of him, [D]we
all stopped [Am]going, and the [F]man who had once
seemed so tall [D]and who now seems so much smaller
[G]left our tow[Am]n, saying[D] no, no, no.
We lived through the [G]boredom of the time [D]that followed,
[G]telling each other [F]pale stories
[E]of what once was
and what [D]might have been if.
We lived on histories and hopes.
We did this until the miracle
we never thought would happen
again happened,
Another stranger came into our [Am]town,
and he [D]too was [G]tall and [D]dark and had [Am]eyes that could look right down into the bottom of you.
[E]And he got us all together in the big[D] auditorium,[Am]
and with the light on him, we were in the [D]dark.
He [Am]chanted,
The [G]flippity -chip on the bippity -bop,
[D]the flippity -chip on the bippity -bop.
[Am]And we joined in and the magic [C]was in us, and
[G]he was laughing and all his might was
with him, and he was shouting,
yes, yes, [D]yes.
But there [E]were those [D]among us
who were jealous and so forth, you know.
You know [Am]what they did.
Little by little, [Bm]a little later,
[D]they put us back on [Am]the narrow pat[Em]h.
[E]This is the way [F]things have been [Am]in our town
for as long as anyone cares to remember.
[G]By the way,
how are things [Am]in your town?[D]
