[Verse 1]
[G]I got the hospitality, hos[D]pitality blu[G]es
Man, I tell ya, I'm feelin' mighty low
My get up and go is just a got up and go
I think I'm gonna have to see a doctor
or something like that
and get me a checkup
Well, I'll tell you, fellow,
I'm just an old country boy myself,
but before you do anything like that,
you better hear what I got
to say. Yeah?
Because back about a couple of months ago,
I [C]had a little touch of lumbago,
and I [G]called on my doc to [D]see what
he'd sug[G]gest.
You don't say.
And he said, man,
it's plain to see the [C]hospital's
the place you ought to [G]be
because what you need is good old
-fashioned rest.
In a hospital?
Well, when I got there, I had an interview,
and I [C]figured they
[G]were sent by [C]the revenue
[G]be cause they was most concerned
about my finance.
About your money, huh?
The nurse gave me this hospital
gown to put on,
and I [C]figured she must not have thought I
was [G]grown.
That thing was so short,
I [D]had to leave on my [G]pants. Wow.
Just about time I got settled in bed,
this [C]boy in white walked up and said,
I'm [G]Dr. Smith,
and I gotta run some blood tests.
Blood? I said, wait a minute, fella,
there's some mistake.
My [C]blood's all right, I just
got the backache.
And we had a big argu[G]ment,
and [D]I come out second [G]best.
Mm -hmm.
After he'd taken all the blood I could spare,
he [C]got a sheet of paper
and pulled up a [G]chair
and asked me a million [D]questions
if you ask of [G]one.
Is that right?
When he finally got off of that talking jag,
he [C]pulled out a little black doctor's [G]bag
and gave me the darndest [D]physical
I ever [G]had done.
I wouldn't like that. He beat on me
with a hammer
and tickled my feet
and [C]did some [G]things I better [C]not repeat,
[G]and about the time he finished,
another boy in [D]white walked
[G]in.
You don't mean it.
I found out that he was an intern there,
and I [C]want you to know he pulled up a chair
and [G]we went through that
[D]whole darn mess [G]again.
Well, I'll just tell you,
I'm feeling better already.
For the next four hours after his exam,
I got a [C]brain [G]wave and one of them
cardiograms
and an x -ray picture
of every [D]bone in my body, I [G]reckon.
An x -ray.
Whoever fixed my tray
thought I was on a diet.
There [C]wasn't enough food
to keep a small bird [G]quiet,
and it was made to taste
so you wouldn't ask for second.
Well, I'll tell you, I'm a big eater myself.
As if I hadn't done seen enough action,
those [C]doctors came back and put me in [G]traction,
and the weights were so heavy,
they pulled me out of bed three
times.
Weightlifting, huh?
By then, my back was really hurting,
and when they [C]put me on a board,
I knew for [G]certain
that their definition of rest
was different from mine.
Great day.
Well, they left the room,
and I was dozing off
when the [C]fella beside me started to [G]cough,
and the man across [D]the hall
started having some sort [G]of chill.
Mmm.
When they finally got quiet,
I dozed off again,
and [C]in a little while,
that nurse was [G]back in
and woke me up
just to [D]give me a sleeping [G]pill.
Well, was she cute?
About five minutes after
the nurse had gone,
some[C]body down the hall cut a radio [G]on,
and so I rocked and [D]rolled
for the rest of the [G]night.
About six the next morning,
that boy was back in,
put [C]a tube in my stomach
and drew blood [G]again,
and the nurse gave me a shot
that [D]knocked me out like [G]a light.
Mmm!
When I came to, I thought I was in a tomb,
found [C]out they had taken me
in the operating room,
and right [G]then and there,
I knew I'd had enough rest.
Almost did, huh?
Well, I jumped up from there,
and I must have looked cute
or [C]running down the hall in
my birthday [G]suit,
And I left that place
as soon as [D]I could get [G]dressed.
Man, I'm feeling plum
[G]b good now.
I ain't going no doctor.
Man, I'm going home.
Well, I'll tell you, if you're half dead,
you got nothing to lose.
But if just a little rest is all you need,
if you go there, it's guaranteed.
[D]You'll [C]get the [D]hospitality [G]blues.
