[Verse 1]
The devil ap[Gm]pears.
He is a little old man
carrying [G]a butterfly net.
[Gm]Give me your fiddle. [G]No. Sell it me. [Am]No.
[G]I'll give you this book for [F]it then.
[G]Can't read.
Makes no difference.
There's no need.
[Gm]With this book you don't have
[G]to read.
It's more than a book.
It's wealth untold.
You've only to open it, lo and behold.
You can have [Gm]all you [G]want, your
heart's desire,
all the best things in life,
anything you require,
banknotes, bare bones, and gold.
He holds the book out to the soldier.
But look, if it's worth all that money,
sir, this little job,
that old fiddle of mine you want only
cost a few bob.
So you've a real bargain.
Say yes.
Right then. It's a deal.
He gives the fiddle to the devil
and begins [F]to read.
[G]On site, col[Bb]lateral, not[C]e o[G]f hand,
market quotations for Friday the 31st.
What day is today?
It's a Tuesday.
Why, it's Tuesday, the 28th.
What's this?
Here's a book that's ahead
of the date.
A strange sort of book.
It tells you things before they happen.
[F]Strange.
[G]Come home with me.
Now, what do you say?
Why, what's up?
This thing won't [G]play.
You must teach [F]me to [G]make it go.
[C]I've only [G]ten days' you know.
I shall lend you my carriage
and pair.
If you walk, you'll be much
more slow.
Mother'll worry if I'm late.
It's [F]not the first
time she's had to [G]wait.
And my girlfriend expects me to.
You'll make it up to her soon.
Should be all the more pleased
when you do.
[C]And this place of you[Bb]rs, is [G]it abroad?
Wined, dined, [F]all [G]found,
full bed and board,
Home in a carriage like [F]a lord,
[G]Two or three days,
Step out of your way,
And then you'll be rich
as the king of Cathay.
What sort of rituals [Am]down your way?
[G]Steak, eggs and chips three times a day.
[F]And to drink [Bb]champag[G]ne rosé.
Well, Joseph goes off [D]home with old Nick
and [G]he finds that the old boy doesn't
cheat.
New clothes, soft beds
and plenty to eat.
Yes, Joseph has prob
ably done [G]up a treat
And [Em]each chose the [G]other
as they undertook the way of the fiddle
[C]and [F]the way [G]of the book
Yes, [Em]the old fellow [C]kept his word
Two [G]days [C]well spent
[G]then came [D]the [F]third
[G]That morning [C]the old man wakes [G]Joseph
as soon as it's light
and he [Bb]says are [G]you ready?
And Joseph says right
did you have a good night?
And Joseph says, yes,
and the devil looks on
as he gets up to dress.
Have [F]you any [G]complaint?
And Joseph says, no.
Right you are, says old Nick.
[G]Then off we go.
They get in the carriage waiting below,
and the devil says, hop,
[C]and off [F]they go.
[G]Only Joseph,
watching the horses' flying [F]feet,
finds [G]himself holding on with both hands to
his seat with all his might,
till his knuckles are white.
Hold tight, cries the little old man,
hold on tight.
Joseph would like to get up and jump out,
but he hasn't a chance.
Take care, see how my horses prance,
their [G]leaders advance,
they're taking the air,
take care.
The carriage is suddenly [Eb]treading up in the air,
[G]hurtling, rattling,
rolling round the sky,
and Joseph's hair stands on end,
and he nearly faints.
Have you any complaints?
Have you any complaints?
Higher and higher,
over valley and hill,
faster and faster,
up and up they soar,
till [F]time stands still.
Then everything [G]is as it was before.
