[Verse 1]
[C]The
Elves and the
[G]Shoemaker
[C]Long, long ago, [G]during
Christmas [F]time,
tinsel sparkled and bells did [G]chime.
[C]There was a shoe shop decor
[F]ated with lights.
It looked so cosy and warm [G]an d bright.
[C]But sadly ins[Am]ide the[C] shop was str[F]ife.
The poor shoe[G]maker and his wife
didn't have [F]near enough to
[G]eat, no
Christmas pudding [Am]or t[G]asty sweets.
[F]See, the shoemaker and his wife togeth[G]er only
just had [Am]enough pieces of [G]leather to make
one pair of [F]shiny shoes.
He [Em]cried, oh dear,
[C]what shall we do?
He took the leather and then he cut it, sew, sew,
sewing each little bit, [Am]cob -cobbling the
[Dm]leather into [G]shoes,
but [Gm]the poor shoemaker [Bbm]was feeling [F]blue.
I just [C]can't carry on, [Am]he said,
and drooped his [F]tired and heavy [E]head, [F]leaving his half -made
shoes [G]in the shed.
He went off to sleep in his big
[Am]old bed.[F]
[Am]The next morning [F]the shoemaker went down,
but soon he lost his worried frown.
[Am]Someone had [G]finished making the shoes.
He [C]ran to tell his wife the news.
[F]You won't believe it,
[G]Maria, he [Am]cried.
He was laughing [G]and his
eyes were wide.
My shoes [C]were finished in the [F]night.
They are [G]so perfect and [Am]so bright.
[G]His wife jumped up and [C]out of her bed.
But who finished them?
[F]She said.
They looked at the
shoes together.
How beautiful looked [C]the shiny leather.
[G]That very day[F] the new shoes sold
for seven shiny coins of gold.
[C]The shoemaker and his wife jumped for [F]joy,
now
Christmas they could en[Dm]joy.[Em]
[C]That night, just before they [F]went to bed,
they [C]crept silently [Am]into the shed.
[F]They wanted [C]to see if there were clues about
[G]who had made [F]the lovely shoes.
[C]Suddenly there was a
jingle [F]and a rustle.
[G]Into the shed [C]two elves did [F]bustle.
Marja,
[C]look !" the shoemaker said.
The elves' hats were
fluffy and red.
[G]Christmas [C]elves! his wife whispered back.
The [F]elves worked with a creak [G]an [Dm]d a clack,
sew [F]-sewing shoes [C]together, cob -cobbling some
[F]new leather.
[G]Soon the elves had made a shiny
[C]new pair.
They ran out and left the
shoes right there.
[F]Green leather shoes that sparkled so bright,
made by [C]elf magic, [G]during [Am]the night.
The shoemaker[C]'s wife said to him then,
[F]Why, they've helped us
out again.
We should give them something back,
[F]something those kind elves [G]lack.
[F]I agree,
Maya, [Am]the shoemaker said,
[G]but what to give those elves in the shed?
[C]Then his wife said,
Hmm, aha, [C]I know, they need s[F]ome warm
winter clothes.
[C]She made woolly jumpers for the elves, and
laid [F]them out on the shelves.
From [C]then on the elves always helped out,
and none of them ever went without.
