[Verse 1]
[G]Twa[C]s[G]
the night before Christmas
went [C]all through the house.
Not a creature was [G]stirring,
not even a mouse.
The stockings were [Em]hung
by the chimney with care,
in [G]hopes that St. Nicholas
soon would be there.
The [C]children were nestled
all [G]snug in their beds,
while visions of sugarplums
danced in their heads.
And [C]Mama in her kerchief
and I in [G]my cap
Had just settled our brains
for a long winter's nap.
When [C]out on the lawn
there [G]arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bed to
see what was the matter
Away to [C]the window [G]I flew like a flash
Tore [C]open the shutter[G]s
and threw up the [C]sash
The moon [G]on the breast
of the new -fallen snow
gave a luster of midday
to objects below
when [C]what [G]my wondering eyes did appear
but [C]a miniature sleigh
and a tiny reindeer
[G]with [C]a little old driver so [G]lively and quick
I knew in a moment he
must be Saint Nick.
More [C]rapid than eagles his coursers
they came and he whistled and [G]shouted
and called them by [C]name
Now Dasher, now [G]Dancer, now Prancer, and Vixen, on Comet,
on Cupid, [C]on Donner, and Blitzen,
to the top of the porch,
to the top of the [G]wall,
now dash away, dash away, dash away [C]all,
as leaves that before the
wild hurricane fly
when they meet with an obstacle
[G]out to the [C]sky.
So up to the [G]housetop the coursers
they flew with a sleigh full of toys
and St. Nicholas too,
And [C]then in a twinkling,
I heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each [G]little hoof.
As I [C]drew in my head
and [G]was turning around on the [C]chimney,
St. [G]Nicholas came with a bound.
He was [C]dressed all in [G]fur
from his head to his [C]foot,
and his clothes were all
[G]tarnished with ashes and soot.
A [C]bundle of [G]toys he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler
just opening his pack.
His eyes, how they twinkled.
His dimples, [C]how merry.
[G]His cheeks [C]were like roses,
[G]and his nose like a cherry.
His droll little mouth
was drawn up [C]like a [G]bow,
and the [C]beard on his chin
[G]was as white as the snow.
[C]The stump of a pipe
he held tight [G]in his teeth,
and the smoke,
it encircled his head like a wreath.
He [C]had a broad face
and a [G]little round belly that shook [C]when
he laughed like a [G]bowl full of jelly.
He [C]was chubby and [G]plump,
a right jolly old elf,
and I [C]laughed when I saw [G]him in
spite of myself.
A wink of his eye
and a twist of his head
soon gave me to know
I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word,
but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings,
then turned with a jerk,
and [G]laying his finger aside of his nose,
and Giving a nod [G]up the chimney,
he rose, he [C]sprang to his sleigh,
[C]to his team gave [G]a whistle,
[C]and away they all flew
like the down of a thistle,
but I heard him exclaim,
ere he drove out of [C]sight,
Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night.
